Behind the Song:
As I teenager I lived in a big old farmhouse. It was in town but that’s the kind of house it was. No heat upstairs – and it got really cold in the winter. There was a country radio station whose first song of the morning was “Lonesome Cattle Call” by Eddie Arnold. That, and the smell of breakfast cooking, was how I woke up every morning for four years. It was cold then but it’s a nice memory now.
LYRICS:
I long to hear a croaking toad
a rocking chairs moan
A whippoorwill might ease my mind
and carry me back home
CHORUS:
No more plastic people
No concrete or styrofoam
I need to hear my mama sing
an old country song
Lord let me hear a steel guitar
have the fiddle call the tune
A banjo or a mandolin
might brighten up my mood
CHORUS:
No more plastic people
No concrete or styrofoam
I need to hear my mama sing
an old country song
I’d wake up to the radio
Mama cooked and sang along
I’d uncover my head and listen
She loved those country songs
CHORUS:
No more plastic people
No concrete or styrofoam
I need to hear my mama sing
an old country song
I need to hear my mama sing
an old country song
